My List of Best Beaches in the Philippines

updated last 11/05/2016

How's your summer? I hope you already had some good tan lines to showcase.
In case you still don't have that sun-kissed skin: pack your things, drag your friends with you, choose among the best beaches in the Philippines - and go!

jobs fill our pockets, adventures fill our souls.

Again, to each his own. What's outstanding for me could be ordinary to you, and vice versa. I've only listed the top 10 for I think these beaches really have the most stunning view, finest sand, clearest water, and smoothest sea bed. Sorry but the beaches of Camiguin, Caramoan, Palaui, Guimaras, Zamboanga, and Zambales aren't included in my list.

Anyway so based on my own experience, the amusement level, the wow factor, the quality of the sand, and everything else - here's the list of my best beaches in the Philippines (as of Nov 05, 2016).

11. El Nido, Palawan

This beach area fronts most of the resorts and restaurants in El Nido. The water is nice and is definitely above any other beaches in the country. Wow factor is high specially when I consider the stunning limestone formations as its background. There are 2 other beaches in El Nido that is worth visiting: namely Marimegmeg and Nacpan.

10. Blue Lagoon, Ilocos Norte

I cant agree more why this is called Blue Lagoon or Maira-ira of the locals in Pagudpud. The water is really crystal clear and blueish. I love how simple this beach is. The sand may not be very fine, but it is white. Wow factor is still high.  Since it's located on the upper left most island in the country, this beach doesn't get very crowded, well except on Holy Week.

9. Sumilon, Cebu

To be honest, I only went to Sumilon just to experience this so called glamorous camping. I can't describe how amazed I was when we approached the island of Sumilon. I was breathless. The sandbar is unbelievably beautiful. It was another "I'm a proud Pinay" moment.

8. Malcapuya, Coron, Palawan

If I would choose just 1 beach for the entire province of Palawan, then this would be Malcapuya in Coron. The sand is so pristine. The water is so clear and clean. And as a big bonus, the underwater kingdom is awesome as well. I have to admit, Coron is an annual thing for me. My go-to-place every holy week.

Updated 11/05/2016 - not the best beach
in Palawan anymore

7. Malamawi Beach, Basilan

This beach is I think the most unspoiled among the beaches I've been to. Only the locals and the adventurous ones can ever reach this place and see the serene beach of Malamawi. Every risk has a reward, and Malamawi Beach just didn't disappoint as it boasts its white and fine sand + clear water. I almost forgot that I was in the terror town of Basilan. ^_^

6. Apo Reef, Occidental Mindoro

For me, a great beach must have a white sand, fine seabed, clear water, and a rich underwater kingdom. Apo Reef seems to be very blessed to have all of these. The 40-min airplane ride to San Jose Mindoro, then a 2-hour bus ride to Sablayan, and another 2-hour boat ride to Apo Reef could be exhausting - but I assure you it's all worth your ride. This could have been in a higher spot if not for some garbage around the island and a lot of sea mosquitoes at night time.

5. Dako Island, Siargao, Surigao Del Norte

All this time I thought Siargao's beaches are only made for surfers. I was wrong! Im very delighted to see this paradise island after a 45-min boat ride away from the mainland and the surfers' haven Cloud Nine. I love the purity of sand, the water, and the simplicity of the place. I so love the beach that Im willing to bathe under the striking sunrays for the entire day. Actually, Dako Island could have ranked 3rd in my top beaches list only if I wasn't biased. Haha!

4. Panglao, Bohol

Forgive me Im biased. Bohol will always be a personal favorite. As of 2012, I've already visited Bohol thrice, and every single visit just made me love Bohol more. Who wouldn't be attracted to see a place with a wonder of nature, historic site, river cruise, rare animal, organic food, great beach, and superb underwater world! Bohol is simply a complete family getaway.

3. Boracay, Aklan

My P5,000 Boracay Trip
including airfare and 3 water activities

Surprise, Boracay ranks 2nd in my list! As much as I wanted the hard-to-reach places and back-to-basic setups, I also wanted a beach that's very accessible and convenient. Given the white sand and the very picturesque beach - Boracay is constantly offering new activities to try, from reef walking, parasailing, cliff diving, zorb, and a lot more. I've been to Boracay thrice and it never failed to show me why it's still the Philippine's premiere tourist attraction. The best part why I love Boracay- the pride that it brings me whenever I see tourists from all around the world cross the oceans just to reach this little gem (of course, more visitors = more jobs).

2. Calaguas, Camarines Norte

Each island has its own beauty but there's really one beach that stands out among the others. 3 years ago, I had the privilege to see Calaguas for the first time. It was an untouched beauty. Wow factor is extremely high. The sand is creamy, the water is so clear and swim-able (meaning i dont have to go far just to be in a 7-feet deep area), and the whole place is peaceful. The water is so irresistible that i didn't mind having sunburns! It's a priceless moment to have this beach all by ourselves- the sand served as our ground sheet and the stars as our light. I can still remember the way I felt when it's time to go home. It's just hard to leave (and Im not even a fan of exaggerations and drama lines).

Calaguas used to top my list until I reached Balabac, Palawan.

1. Balabac, Palawan

If you think you've seen the best of Palawan, think again. El Nido, Coron, and San Vicente are the more popular options, but if you hassle your way to the southwest-most edge of the Philippines, you will be rewarded with the endless swimming pool-like beaches of Balabac.

When I used to have my list of best beaches in Pinas, I would carefully deliberate to come up with the best beach before I decide. But after I saw the beaches in Balabac (specially Onuk), I was in complete shock. I had high expectations before I reached the place and to my surprise, Onuk was even more stunning upclose. There's no contest. This is indeed the best beach in Philippines.

And just so you know, there are other beaches in Balabac which have their own charms too. Punta Sebaring and Candaraman made us breathless as well.

Care to share your best beaches in the Philippines?
Im looking forward to try some Mediterranean Cruises someday but since Im still jobless then an El Nido trip would be a cheap alternative! Im positive this beach would make it to my list.

Top 15 Travel Blogs in the Philippines

In participation with Out of Town Blog's poll, here are my top 15 Pinoy travel blogs.

I know there is a massive number of travel blogs which are equally good (specially the newbie blogs), but these are the blogs which, after reading, would make me feel I have a boring life and a boring blog. Haha

One way or another, I wish I have these travel bloggers':
1. burning passion to travel over the years
2. one of a kind adventure
3. witty and not so serious writing style
4. attractive photos and blog layout

Fine, I am a certified inggetera! ^_^
..but no, I wont trade my blogname for anything. and you know Im not kiddin'

2Go - Travel by Sea to Boracay

Having lived in the crowded mainland of Manila, I never really had the chance to travel by sea. Well of course, riding those improvised boat whenever it floods is an exception. ^_^

I've been wanting to travel by sea but the airlines offer competitive rates that made the airfare and seafare almost the same. Not to mention the long journey time on the ship that could bore me. Gladly I heard about 2Go Superferry's fleet. The ads showcased how fun it is to travel by sea and instantly I knew I had to experience that. It's finally my chance to ride a big ship.

2Go Travel - Batangas to Boracay

The Route: 2Go offers several trips from Manila. The destination I chose is Boracay. It's been 3 years since I last saw the paradise island. Anyway, travel time from Batangas to Boracay is 10 hours. Sounds uncool because of the long journey ride, but what the heck, this 2Go ship looks fabulous compared to the old and boring RoRo ships.

2Go Tickets: Free! Thank you teh Nicole, a former employee of 2Go/Negros Navigation para sa pagtupad ng pangarap kong makasakay ng barko. *teary-eyed*. Anyway, you can book your 2Go tickets on their website or at any 2Go shops.

wee, 2Go gift certificates!

Last March 8, Friday - my housemate and I both filed half days leaves in the office for this 2Go night trip to Boracay. Since the ship is scheduled to leave at 8pm, we agreed to left Manila before the dreaded Friday rush hour takes place. We left C5-Taguig at 5pm and we reached Batangas Port just 1.5 hours after. Honestly, we could have left later but we're worried about the parking area. Gladly, we found out that Park 'N Sail in Batangas Port has a number of parking slots.

parking at Batangas Port

Hey look, we got a 2Go priority parking slot!

bye Leila, see you in 2 days!
parking fee for 2 nights - P322 (ang mahal! hehe)

We left the car and proceeded to the terminal. Since it's both our first time to ride a ship, we just watched the other passengers on what to do and where to go next. Hehe I always love the feeling of being a newbie! Anyway, the boarding process is smooth and easy.

2Go Boarding Gate

While Remay and I were having a chat, a lady looked at my toes and suggested a pedicure for me. Ang harsh! haha

ang harsh mo teh ^_^

As early as 7:30pm, the employees opened the gate and announced that they were ready to accept guests. Im not sure why everyone immediately lined up. Relaks guys, may seat/bed number naman ang tickets so why rush?

We were delighted as we board the 2Go Superferry ship. Actually the ship is not new, but it is repainted and maintained. The staff are the best. They are very well trained, very courteous, and very
accommodating. Para silang flight attendants which wear smiles all throughout.

magenta is the color!

everyone's enjoying the ride

infernes, the ships looks very photogenic!

The crew assisted us to our accommodation. This pathway leads to the Tourist, Cabin, and State rooms.

Cabin and State rooms

Okay, newbies talaga kami. Our accommodation type is Tourist. We didn't know that we could stay anywhere we want. Kaya pala nag-uunahan sila. Toinks. Nonetheless, there were not so many passengers that night. We didn't have a hard time looking for a spot to settle.

Tourist Accommodation
with aircon and tv

Tourist is an aircon type accommodation. There is a bed and a pillow but there are no linen and pillow case. You still have to rent them for a minimal price. Since the area is spacious, this is just perfect for families and big groups. Shared bathrooms are located on the rear end. Infernes, the bathrooms are clean, but not really maintained. It gets dirty after a few hours. Hehe

perstaymers sa barko!

We checked the upper deck and found the Super Value type of accommodation. Most foreigners prefer to stay here because the air comes from the ocean breeze. I think this is already comfortable enough, specially the air is refreshing at night.

Super Value
non-aircon / upper deck

Meals are usually included but for more options, there is a canteen on the upper deck which serves good yet affordable meals.

Horizon Cafe

a meal costs P115, already includes drinks

Since we were dying to experience the Cabin accommodation, we registered ourselves in the front desk and made a reservation of ever we can avail of an upgrade. The upgrade rate from Tourist to Cabin costs P250. The upgrade rate from Tourist to State Room is P800. Well, a cabin will do for us. Luckily, our names are paged right after the ship started to sail.

welcome to our Cabin Room
room for 4, with sockets, tv, private bathroom

This is fabulous! For just P250 each, we had our own space and own bathroom! Unlike the Tourist, our beds have comfy linens, fleece blankets, pillowcases, and our own window separator for privacy. Lovely!

finally, pwede na magcharge! hihi

clean bathroom with mirror

with hot and cold shower

I really recommend this Cabin accommodation. Honestly, we didn't realize we already arrived in Boracay because we had a very good sleep. Sadly on our way home, we did't get lucky enough to avail of an upgrade. Nakakastress ang magbyahe sa umaga na maingay lahat ng tao.

2Go Review: For me, this is a must try. I loved how smooth the trip was. Walang hilo at all. The staff are the most friendly and most helpful. This is a good alternative way to travel, specially when you avail 2Go promo fares. Very good option for barkadas and company outing!

now it's more fun to travel by sea

where 2Go next? ^_^

2Go website: http://travel.2go.com.ph
Schedule: departs Batangas at 9:00 pm; arrives in Boracay at 7:00 am
departs Boracay  at 8:00 am; arrives in Batangas at 7:00 pm
2Go ticket prices: Tourist P900. Super Value P800

Luke, my Latest Travel Buddy

It was 3 years ago when I first owned a DSLR camera. Out of spontaneity, I named him Harvey. He's my consistent travel buddy - from the extreme north island of Palaui, to the eastern island of Siargao, down to the southernmost province of Tawi-Tawi. He's my only companion when I crossed the borders of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. He's even there when I was accused as a drug trafficker in Bali, Indonesia. Haha The best part is - Harvey never needed extra care. Sanay siyang madumihan, mabasa, at mauntog. Despite that, he remained to be at its best condition.

Thank you Harvey sa serbisyong totoo. Sulit na sulit ang pagbili ko sayo...
I hope your new owner will take care of you.

Now I have something to admit. It was not Harvey who's with me when I traveled to Misibis Bay, South Korea, El Nido, and Bellarocca. It was Cianna, my housemate Remay's Canon 60D. Cianna's pictures were so outstanding and eventually I got bored with Harvey. To cut the story short (at siguro dahil inggetera ako) I wanted a camera upgrade.

Meet my latest travel buddy...

Luke, my Canon 60D
it's Cianna's twin!

                                                                18-135mm and 50mm lenses
not new. these are the same lenses i used before.

○ For the record, I got confused with switching to Nikon. It's very obvious that Nikons have better color depth and significantly better image quality against Canon counterparts. Despite these, I stick with Canon. I want more natural colors and softer photos. Most of all, Canon cameras fit my hands perfectly. It's as simple as that, I feel Canon.

○ Like Harvey, I also bought Luke from DBGadgets. It's an online shop, pero sushal na sila ngayon. They have a store now in Aphaland South Gate, right beside MRT Magallanes.

○ Plans for the year: None so far. Charot. Pangarap ko makasakay ng 2Go papuntang Caticlan. Gusto ko din mag-India kung afford ko ang pamasahe. Umii-scout pa din ko ng perfect travel buddy for that trip. Batanes, if possible. May flight na ba ulit ang SEAIR? And Jolo, kung isasama ako ni Era.

○ Yes Im very pressured to organize a joining trip. Relaks lang kayo jan. Iisip pa ako kung saan maganda pumunta. If you have suggestions, please drop a comment.

My Hyperactive Year of 2012

As compared to my 2011, my To-Do-List for 2012 has fewer items.
I was just surprised to when I realized I've also accomplished a lot of things which I really didn't plan to do this year.

January. Since it was the month of festivals, Carla and I faked our identities and grabbed some free airline tickets. Exciting pero wag tularan. Anyway, we've finally experienced the very famous Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo. The energy and vibe were all over the place. It was priceless to be part of this celebration.

February. The love month brought us a complimentary stay in this lovely and luxurious resort of Misibis Bay. Aside from the facilities and the Armada toiletries, the excellent service made our stay very memorable.

Then I was very delighted to receive a blogger's pass to be the first ones to explore The Mind Museum. I really planned to visit this place before I got retrenched from my job then. Anyway, it's just 200 meters away from our office building so I just bribed by former boss to let me go to the science museum while it's still office hours. Hehe

Summer time was fast approaching so a close encounter with the whale sharks in Oslob Cebu took place. This was controversial though because of the improper handling of this activity. Nevertheless, it was surreal to finally see the gentle giants, extreme up close.

On the other hand, I received a retrenchment letter from my previous company. To celebrate our last happy days in the office, my teammates and I went to Baler and surfed our hearts out! This trip was one of the happiest this year.

March. My much awaited Southern Eskapo with Dong Ho finally happened. Our route: Zamboanga - Basilan - Tawi Tawi. It was heart pounding and eye opener at the same time. Im very thankful for this learning-beyond-books experience.

ranks 6th in my Best Beaches in the Philippines list

Im a budget traveler but I do love splurging as well. Whenever my dear friend Rob is home, it's time for some fabulous staycation! Next year, we'll really target The Farm at San Benito. Right Rob? =)

April. I officially became a glorified tambay! I took advantage of having all the time I have to explore the best beaches in the country. Summer is simply the best time to be unemployed! I started by organizing an open trip to Apo Reef. Thank you guys for joining. Ansaya neto!

ranks 5th in my Best Beaches in the Philippines list

Right after this, Donnie and I flew to Mindanao and sailed our way to the island of Siargao. It was paradise. And of course, to swim with the stingless jellyfish in Bucas Grande was nothing but surreal. Thank you sir Edelito and your family for accommodating us.

ranks 2nd (if I wasn't biased) in my Best Beaches in the Philippines list

May. It was such a privilege to be part of a reality-travel show called PHL360 - 8 Travelers, 4 Destinations, 1 Full Circle. The challenges were 1. i dont know where the crew would bring me 2. i dont who would be my partner 3. i dont know what challenges await us in there. The week-long trip was unpredictable but fun! I salute the whole team, specially the crew for the effort. All out for the love of travel.

  8 Travelers, 4 Destinations, 1 Full Circle

awesome PHL360 team - east leg

the water split for me, Im one with the sea
Bontod Reef, Masbate

believe it or not, my assigned partner Hannah and I only met on the day of our trip
and for the record - there were no dead air moments and we NEVER did fight! haha

watch  PHL360 episode here ---> http://phl360.com/the-show/

June. My skin was so black and burnt but a day after my birthday, my dearest friends and I attempted to explore Gigantes Island. Although it wasn't a success, this trip was sooo fun and crazy! Also, out of the money I received from being retrenched, I was able to buy my very much desired gadgets: Canon's latest underwater camera and a waterproof watch. Ansarap ma-retrench!

super fun birthday trip with my dearest friends
gadgets: katas ng retrenchment

Btw, after doing a lot of traveling I got bored. I decided to finally start working again. My funds needed to be replenished. Hehe

July. I was finally convinced to have a dental surgery to remove my two wisdom teeth. The healing process was more painful and not fun at all, specially I can only eat soft food. Imagine, I was only eating mamon and mashed potato for 4 weeks!

August. I have no plans of renting a place near my work area in Taguig. It's just boredom that struck me and made me decide I needed to experience something new. I moved out and rented an apartment. Boredom really kills. ^_^

September. Nothing was remarkable for this month, including this so-so buffet at Circles Makati Shangri-La.

October. It was a lot of firsts- first time to apply for a visa, first time to visit a first-world country, and first time to experience autumn! The place to be is South Korea.

A day after I got home from South Korea was supposedly our Davao trip for Remay's birthday. Unfortunately, a lot of unlucky things happened and we missed our flight. Oh well, Davao is still not meant for me.

November. The 4-day long weekend brought Remay and I to the world renowned island of El Nido in Palawan. The clear blue water, breathtaking limestone formations, the laid back lifestyle, and the good vibe of the enthusiastic tourists are the obvious reasons why everyone hails El Nido.

lazy time in the beaches of El Nido

December. After the sweetest Misibis Bay escape, the next thing I really looked forward to is to experience Bellarocca. I knew this day would come, the day a group buying site would offer a great and irresistible promo deal! ^_^

Our annual outreach will happen on the 29th of this month. Thanks to those who have already given their support.

im very excited to have a day out with the girls!

Alright I admit it, I just can't keep my still. PHL360 was right. One minute Im luxuriating in a 5-star resort, the following week Im roughing it out in the far flung provinces of Basilan and Tawi-Tawi. Well, this is just me getting bored. (nakakapagod pala when I get bored. san ba nakakabili ng pampa-kalma?)

I feel blessed for the exciting year the Lord has given me. It may not always be as I planned, but Im sure the alternative road always leads me to new friendship, new discoveries, and new realizations.

Thank you 2012 for the hyperactive journey! ♥
