My Traumatic Experience as an Alleged DRUG TRAFFICKER in Bali Indonesia

For first time readers..
My name is Chyng Reyes. I graduated with a degree of Electronics and Communications Engineering in a state university in Intramuros. I work in a BPO company in MoA complex as part of Systems Development team. Im a blogger who frequently travels.
And Im an individual who has never taken prohibited drugs.

mga BINTANG-ero kayo!

My friend Dyanie and I planned an SG-Bali trip for our birthdays. We took Airphil's Manila-SG flight last May 26, 2011.

Dyanie was held in the Immigration simply because she cant present her company ID. She was suspected na mag-paiwan sa SG to work, and never return to Pinas. This experience alone was heart pounding- though it's only a matter of being approved and being declined to fly to SG. So what more if it's a matter of life and death...

Last May 28, we flew from SG to Bali via Airasia.
Airasia's airbus was full of different nationalities. But Dyanie and I were the only Filipinos on board. We landed in Denpasar airport at almost 11:40pm. We lined up in the Xray machines for our luggage to be scanned.

The moment the officer saw my Philippine passport - he carried my luggage. He asked me "is this yours?" I said yes. I started thinking what could be wrong with my luggage..
Then the officer scanned our hands too. We don't have any idea what's that for so we asked him. He answered "secret".

After he scanned our hands with that stick, he looked at me and said "come and follow me." He looked at Dyan and said "you also."

omg. what's wrong?!

So in front of all passengers of Airasia that night, kami pa ni Dyan ang mukhang may drugs! We followed the officer because we dont have a choice. We obeyed him, as if we already did something wrong. All other passengers were staring at us..

syet.. anong meron sa bag ko. at anong marks ang nakita nya sa kamay namin? kinabahan ako. this inst just the usual immigration thing. i felt this is something serious!

We entered the holding room. There were 3 officers inside. 2 males and a lady officer.
"Meet my Filipina friend. She was caught hiding packs of heroins in her luggage"
said the officer. Sabay turo sa picture frames sa wall nila. It seemed like a gallery of recently caught drug traffickers all over the world. He also reminded me that DEATH is the PENALTY of those drug traffickers.

Paksyet. It's a matter of life and death in the hands of these Indonesian Police Officers. Im 100% sure Dyan and I were clean!

They offered something to drink but we refused.

"Do you know her?" asked the officer as he was pointing to the girl in the picture frame. - I answered no.
"Did you take drugs?" - Of course not!
"Did you have drugs hidden in your body?" - What?! Never!

nagpanting yung tenga ko. galit na galit ako. at the same time nalungkot. bakit ganun, tagged na ang pinoys as drug traffickers dahil sa kasalanan ng iilan..

"Let's check your bag".
The officer searched my things thoroughly. I was just looking at him. He checked every compartment of my luggage too.

Ang lakas ng kaba ng dibdib ko. I knew he could frame me up. At wala na kong laban if that happens. Nasa teritoryo nila kami.

After he messed with all my things and found nothing, I asked the officer what could be wrong and why was he checking us. He just answered "because the 2 of you are beautiful girls."

For the 3rd time, we went outside the holding room to scan my luggage. I was really very nervous (and irritated). I could imagine him almost saying that he found something in my bag. Remember, he was holding my bag all the time. I never had the chance to touch it again..

you dont trust us. and we dont trust you either. ang advantage lang, nasa Indonesia tayo. at kayo ang may authority.

Now they looked at Dyan.

"Are you hiding drugs inside your body?" No!
"Why is your belly big?"

My friend was offended. But she answered politely. "Because I'm fat. And in case you don't see, my arms and legs are proportion to every part of my body."
The lady officer wasn't convinced, she ordered a body check on her.

as narrated by Dyan:
Gusto ko man magsabi ng ayoko ng body check, wala akong nagawa. Bansa nila yan. So sunod lang ako sa gusto nila. Pumasok kami sa Body Check Room. Inikot ko yung mata ko to check if there are surveillance cameras. As in HUBAD lahat. Body search.

no offense pero meron ba silang extensive training na by just touching a body part malalaman na kung may drugs dun? ang hirap maniwala. they never had hightech machines to start with. and why cant they even afford a drug-sniffing dog?! mayabang lang sila. pero wala silang masyadong alam.

Now back in the holding room, I was with the other 2 male officers. They started bragging that they captured all the drug traffickers in the picture frames. Im still not sure what will happen next as they deprived us from telling anything.

What now!? gusto nyo lang may mapatunayan kayo at may madagdag kayong picture jan sa wall nyo?!

Im so proud of Dyan. She went back in the room and still didnt breakdown. I knew I will start crying too if I see her terrified.
Dyan said I dont look scared at all too. I just look very irritated.

========

Yes, the policemen could frameup us.

Just like what has been featured in National Geographic's Locked Up Abroad.
Locked Up Abroad tells true stories and first hand experiences of unsuspecting travelers who embarked on what they thought would be a vacation, only to barely make it home alive.

This is a must watch.

Chris Parnell was arrested in Bali, Indonesia while on vacation with his family and friend, Doggy. He was accused of smuggling 12 kilos of hashish. Went to prison for 11 years!

========

After 1.5 hours, they finally let us go. Wala silang nakita. They thanked us for being cooperative pero di ko pinansin yung hand shake offer nila.
Sabagay their sorry wont be enough. Putangina nyo!

We met the hotel driver who's been waiting for us since 11:40PM. We finally got out of the airport at 1:30AM. I thanked the driver for waiting for us. He wasn't surprised that we were the last to go out. Sabi nya, kapag Pinoy chinecheck daw muna.

Ah ganun..

So it's also fair to call all Indonesian Policemen RAPISTS?!

Indonesian Policemen RAPISTS!
http://en.rian.ru/Religion/20100114/157540293.html

Indonesian Policeman CHILD RAPIST!
http://arsipberita.com/show/indonesia-police-rapes-nine-yr-old-girl-206964.html

How about call all Policemen DRUG DEALERS because of this?

Indonesian Officers DRUG DEALERS
http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/home/anti-narcotics-officers-busted-for-drugs/442310

Or can I tag all Indonesian ADDICTS sabagay 51 thousand locals nila ay junkies?

51 Thousand Drug Addict Indonesians
http://equal-life.blogspot.com/2009/05/thousands-of-people-die-in-indonesia.html

..a dose of their own medicine..

I hope if an Indonesian visits Pinas, ma-tag din sila as RAPISTS, DRUG DEALERS, and ADDICTS instantly! Maramdaman nila sana yung treatment nila samin.. Yan ang rules nila di ba?

Sa sobrang takot ni Dyanie, she cried to sleep that night. Tulala. Di nagsasalita.
Sa sobrang galit ko, di ako nakatulog. I started vomiting.
We felt we were unwelcomed visitors.

Putangina nyo! We're so traumatized that we wont be planning to go out of the country anytime soon.

DEATH for DRUG TRAFFICKERS
and it wont matter if the DRUGS found is really yours
ako na ang praning

We swore not to go back to Indonesia again. We already suffered a lot.
We regret the day we entered this country.

And if you are planning to go to Bali too, well good luck. The next suspect could be you.

..yes you may share this post.

Updated: 06/03/2011

All I wanted is to write my traumatic experience, and to warn my co-Pinoy travelers, specially those who travel solo, that they could be the next "random suspect".

It never crossed my mind that this incident would reach the media and the government.

Initially, I never wanted to file a case, be seen on TV, be heard on the radio programs, and be read on the newspapers. It's really beginning to be stressful now. But the messages Ive been receiving have challenged and pushed me to file my case. Thanks to Ms. Susan Ople, for filing the case on our behalf, and to DFA USEC Rafael Seguis for the support. Hearing the words directly from them gave me more courage to pursue this.

Dyanie and I would like to express our deepest gratitude to Ms. Susan Ople for filing the case on our behalf. We truly appreciate it. This help is what we truly needed. It's glad to know that someone who has the right knowledge about this matter has finally confirmed that this is a case of disrespect.

the case was filed and was received by DFA last June 3, 2011

FYI (specially to those unidentified / anonymous commenters na nagmamarunong lang) do yourselves a favor and stop humiliating
yourselves and showing off your ignorance by leaving nonsense comments. Those are being deleted anyway.

..and finally the Indonesian Ambassador's statement | June 21, 2011

this case has been heard. the ambassador has spoken.

Hi Ate Chyng! I've been a blog reader for a little while now and your blog is one of my faves. =D

I saw the thing at the news and I was shocked when I found out that it was you.=/

Buti you guys, kept your cool. If it were me I would gone ballistic which would probably just make things worse.

It's so sad kasi you were expecting to have a wonderful vacation only to be greeted with that. They were UNFAIR AND EXTREMELY RUDE! Seriously, what a way to welcome their guests.Go and terrify them by suspecting them as drug carriers.

I'd sue and demand public apology. That was just waaaaay under the belt.

Glad both of you are safe. =) God bless and be well ate! =)

Let's not forget that these motherfucking Indonesians are terrorists as well. They're motherfucking muslisms that believe in radical Islam.

Why don't we see how every motherfucking Indonesian here in the Philippines would like to be branded as a fucking terrorist.

I swear these rats deserve the tsunami that hit them years ago, and you know what? They deserve another.

kasalanan din yan ng mga pinoy na ganayan ang trabajo, mag puslit ng droga kaya alaht tyo nadadamay. yung pa prayer prayer vigil s mga pioys n inexecute s china, tama lng yun sa knila. kc wla nmn talagang kasong frame up.. lagi lng yun n alam talaga nila yun na may drugs s loob kc they are paid for bringing those drugs. kya nga dba s aiport may 4 questions? 1. kung syo ba un luggage mo, kung ikaw ba nag pack at alam b ba un laman.. so imposible dn n i-frame up ka s mahal ng drugs, lets blame it to our kababayans, kaya nasiisra ang image natin abroad dhil s kanila. FYI: sa Belgium, pag sinabi na I need a Filipina, it meeans kailangan ng prostitute. Sa spain naman pag sinabi na I have a Filipina, ibig sabhn may katulong sya na Pinay. sa real life yan pati sa mga soap operas mapapanood m yan, mababa ang tingin sa mga Pinays.

Outraged that you both were violated that way.

As with your premise that not all Filipinos are drug traffickers, I don't believe all Indonesian Immigration guys are like those you went through. So for these specific ones, PLEASE file a formal complaint (even remotely) and have a lawyer friend assist you so it will never happen again.

For other travelers, before heading out of the country, know your rights and protocol in case you experience something similar.

It is really important to FIRST get their names, ask if you are being charged or a suspect of any offense, and if you feel you are violated in any way, escalate the situation and request/demand for an officer AND contact someone from the Philippine Embassy or Consulate to mediate.

Wishing you more pleasant travels in the future!

Grabe, Chyng. Ang strange. My friend was telling me about this girl na napagkamalang drug trafficker. All that time, I was thinking na sobrang grabe nung nangyari. And then I asked kung saan niya nabasa.

Not everyone could have been as strong. And it's fantastic na you wrote about it. That way, we can all avoid a similar situation.

May pagka-racist yung reasoning nila. Nakakainis. Pero reading some of the comments, mahirap mag-fight ng fire with fire.

Again, i congratulate you for being so cool about it and sobrang great na you were able to write about it.

And I thought it's already nerve-wracking, yet annoying when am asked too many questions at the Phil. Immigration at times..
I admire both of you for the bravery that neither one broke down nor showed nervousness.. what happened to both of you was very traumatic.. and hurtful, as a Filipino, as well..
Sana lang other people would be open-minded and not generalize..
This is also too worrisome.. Unfortunately, ndi natin kontrolado ang sitwasyon..
I hope you recover and move on from hereon very soon..
God bless.

I'm also a frequent traveler and I sympathize with you and your friend. Nakakatakot nga lang na ma-hold ka sa immigration, what more dalhin ka sa isang back room. OMG. You gals are so brave. Buti nalang nothing happened.

It never entered my mind to visit Indonesia. It's also because years ago, there was an issue regarding these Indonesians killing Chinese people in their place. They didn't just killed those people, they raped, tortured and burned their houses and shops. Reason? Kasi naiinggit sila... It was so drastic kasi I saw photos on the net with girls raped and killed with 'tubo' in their private parts. It was so sick. I'm just relating what I saw because this paved the way of me not going to Indonesia ever.

I hope you'll update your blog on how DFA settled this matter. It's important that you gals be given justice for this kind of harassment.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. This is a very informative and useful reminder to Filipinos who travel abroad. Sorry to hear about your experience, it was terrifying knowing you were in an entirely one-sided situation should the Indonesians decide to take advantage of it. Be glad they didn't. I hope the DFA does something swiftly to correct this, after all Indonesia is a tourist country. This is no way to treat a tourist. If they have a drug problem they should have deployed scanners in their airports instead of resorting to low tech Reid interrogation techniques and body checks. What a way to treat tourists! This is just plain old school law enforcement Reid technique used to intimidate people into admission. Also advice people next time someone arrests you, don't say anything and invoke your rights to an attorney that is appointed by your embassy. Also have someone at home ready to contact the Philippine embassy if you didn't call them within 12 hours upon arrival at your destination country.

It was so unfair, unfair for you, unfair for the FILIPINOS. Alright, given the fact n marami na tayo cases that linked us to Drug Trafficking and all, still we must be treated with high respect as a person. Even CRIMINALS must be treated with respect. You are suspected to be drug traffickers and yet they made you feel that you suffered three lethal injection dahil sa kahihiyan at trauma.

I appeal to the PH Government that they should do something about this. Things like this should be dealt with urgency, wag na sila mag intay na may mabitay na nman dahil sa STREOTYPING sa ating mga Kababayan!

Hi Chyng!

I was appalled by how the Indonesian immigration officers treated you. Very debasing and traumatic. While reading your account, I was stirred to help you file a complaint with the DFA. Good thing Susan Ople helped you. She indeed has more connections to help you push your case. I really hope this gets good attention from the Indonesian government. I am sure that if many Filipinos and other tourists will hear your story, Indonesia's tourism will surely get a big blow.

I will surely take note of this and perhaps, stay away from travelling to Indonesia anytime soon. :)

Thank you for your vigilance and courage in sharing your story. I hope you get over this soon! Travelling is way too fun and enriching, so keep flying girl! :)

Everytime I step on HKG airport, there is always this fear in me because I know they think I am just a Filipino. (a part of Filipino community that runs their economy!). Thats why you have to be confident when you face them.

I admire your courage/composure in that nightmare.

lastly, i want to say na, sana may gawin silang aksyon against dun sa mga nang-harass sa inyo. keep us updated.

Grabe naman ginawa nila sainyo..what you thought was a great vacation turned out to be a dreaded one. Super unfair yung ginawa nila sa inyo. Not all FILIPINO's are like what they think. Its too much labelling an ang ginawa nila and worst turned out into harassment. I wanted to go pa nman to Bali but after reading your story kahit libre pa hndi na talaga ako pupunta dun. I am hoping for the best for this case, sana the government will cooperate and help you through this. This calls for awareness for all of us FILIPINO specially who like to travel abroad.

nakakapang-galit! biruin mo...pgkahirap hirap na nga lumabas ng bansa dito pa lng sa naia, tas hirap pa din makapasok sa ibang bansa..as if the common filipino cant afford to have vacations outside the country!

i am just so glad that you're safe back home, though i still cant imagine the trauma this has brought you two.

i do pray that something is legally done about this so that no other pinoy will be harrassed, humiliated and insulted in Bali, Indonesia, or wherever else in the world.

please do keep us posted. we appreciate your going out into the world telling your story. it raises awareness for the rest of us. thanks for your bravery.

Hi Chyng. Glad that you and your friend are safe.

Pero if sila yung may kasalanan sa atin its the other way around. Nakakalungkot lang. You both deserved an apology from them and for other pinoys as well na naging biktima din ng ganitong pangyayari. And its a good thing that ni share mo to sa lahat, its a warning for us. I admire your braveness. Hope magiging ok kana after the very traumatic exp, so that you get to travel again and share your exciting experiences to us, pero sana wla nang ganitong exp ulit.God bless!

chyng! you imparted your traumatic experience very well, you had me crying! and i'm so happy you're back (safe though scathed) in the Philippines after this unfortunate incident. like you, i love traveling (mostly with my husband) and so far, i've never had anything like this, or even close to this, happen to me. i admire your strength to get through the terrifying scrutiny of the Indonesian immigration people, but more about your being brave to come out and write about it through your blog, which made its way to the awareness of a lot of people, specially people from our government that should be concerned in our (Filipinos) welfare. Something good should happen after this. I guess, you and Dyan were the 'chosen ones' to go through this, if only to benefit more Filipinos and uplift our race. Mabuhay ka!

I'm currently working as senior engr in Batam, among the indonesia's islands closest to Singapore (just 45 mins ferry). For me, yung experience nyo is not really about Filipinos being tagged as drug mules, but merely the corrupt system and bastos na attitude talaga ng most indonesians. So my suggestion to all as I have been travelling also to different countries, PLEASE DO NOT PRIORITIZE YOUR TRAVEL VACATION ON 3RD WORLD COUNTRIES ESPECIALLY INDONESIA. Being a 3rd world, it only means na bulok ang sistema at balasubas mga tao nila. Sad to say, sana mabago na rin ang pagiging 3rd world status ng pinas.

By the way, sobrang tanga at bobo din ng mga indonesians.

Its really sickening to hear how you were being treated, and being picked out of the crowd as if they were playing the lottery. Its extremely discouraging to any young travellers, and I think the Indonesian government needs to iron this out asap and do something to get their policies under control, so this kind of an embarrassment does not happen again, especially between two neighboring countries.

Thank you for sharing this to us and I pray that you and your friend will get the justice you deserve when you were subjected to such humiliating and baseless accusation just because you are Filipinos. Maybe we should do the same to them when they visit our country?

God Bless and rest assured that Filipinos like us will be standing behind you to rally this cause. The world has no right to brand ALL Filipinos just because of some or few rotten apples.

I was also held up when we were crossing borders between Jordan and Israel. I was travelling with a group of pilgrimages. But I wasn't afraid of the people in their immigration because they weren't like those in Indonesia. They called someone over the phone to probably ask someone about who I am or what I was doing there. They let me sit inside their office and even though I don't understand their language, I could feel they weren't there to harm anyone. After less than an hour, they let me go to the bus where everyone was waiting.

I will share your story to everyone. Para no Filipino (and hopefully other nationalities) will ever visit Indonesia ever again! Mamatay na ang tourism nila.

What happened to you was very very traumatic indeed! Even though I'm just a reader, I can vividly see what had happened to you and your friend.

I really feel angry for the racial discrimination, for the awful harassment they did to you, and for the ignorance of those Indonesian officers. What had happened to you is just a big INJUSTICE for the Filipinos and how some other nationalities sees us.

I thank God both of you were able to go home safe. I will pray for both of your fast recoveries.

I did ask the Malaysian immigration that time where I could file a complaint at pinagtatawanan lang nila ako.

The only thing saved me was when he asked where am i working and told them I work in king fahad military hospital then pinalabas na nila ako ni hindi tinuloy buksan ang bag ko, may agenda sila, good thing my type of job saved me kasi dun sila nagpapachek.

Thank you for sharing this and this will serve as an eye opener to everyone who loves leisure travel (solo or not). I know this not only happens in Bali. This could happen anywhere...pati na nga dito sa Pilipinas. Sorry to say this pero sana mga immig officers maka experience din nito para ma feel nila ang trauma na mararanasan sa mga travelers who seriously abide with the rules.

I had the same experience when I went to Macau. They do random check of things too but not as terrifying as what you and your friend experience. They just check my bag and since they didn't see anything, they release me right away. I also have a bad idea that they might put something on my bag while I'm on hold. They also had me sign on something, like release ticket (that was never translated in English) and when I ask what's this for, they said, politely "..if we have not found anything on the bag, they just sign here".

Though its a policy that they do random check, they still need to follow these procedures under human rights code.. Good thing you file a complaint. They deserve to be sanctioned. :)

I've heard stories about this already. In indonesia, talagang pinagtritripan ang pinay kasi may iba talaga, may pinupuslit or andun lang para mag patatak tapos balik ulit sa singapore.

parang mga ibang pinoy yan eh, power tripper rin sila. my friend got questioned for an hour. kasama niya boyfriend niya para mag vacation. galing silang singapore rin. she got detained saying she was there only because her 30days in singapore was over. so they kept asking questions until finally, they bribed her and she just gave money para matahimik.

Chyng, I read your story with goosebumps. I arrive Bali two nights before yours. I never had problems though with the immigration and customs. But to be honest, I was paranoid at that time as a result of the ill-fated stories of Pinoys who were executed in China. Such stories changed the way I perceive foreign travel - from something enjoyable to a vulnerable situation where one may either become a victim of trafficking or discrimination.

I flew via Singapore, another country that has tough penalties for traffickers, and that fueled the fear. To cope with the anxiety, I decided not to check-in any luggage so that all my stuff are with me. I have to check my handcarry luggage from time to time to ensure it is "clean". I have to make sure that nobody, except security personnel, would touch my bags, etc etc.
I empathize with what happened to you, but I think you should refrain from generalizing Indonesians. I have many Indonesian friends and co-workers and many of them are advocates of human rights. yes, there are also crooks the same thing as in Philippines. what the immigration officers did is wrong and that should be addressed properly. I hope our government would do necessary diplomatic actions on this. lastly, i also suggest that you raise concerns about how Filipinos are being treated by our own immigration officials. as you have said your friend feared that she may not be allowed to exit the country - which again is a violation of her right. please write a story too about such experience - why our immigration officers are being so strict and branding all of us as illegal migrant workers. all the best!

I also almost experience the same ordeal when we went to Korea back in 1997 where were interrogated by the immig officers because of suspecting TNTs naman and because of few pax on that flight, all of the Pinoys were interrogated but your experience I think is more traumatic and paranoia inducing... i think its already over stereotyping of Pinoys associated with drugs just because of bad deeds of few people.

I hope you recover from the experience...

Hi. I read your story in chuvaness' blog and i can really relate to what happened to you and your friend. The same thing happend to me last March 21, 2011.

It was my 3rd business trip to Bali and the only time when there was no fasttrack pick-up (there will be someone who line up in the immigration and bring your bags for xray screening) arranged for me. I was the first one to be on the customs area since i didn't have a luggage. On my way to the machine the guard ask for my passport. after 3 guards, this time, they already have my passport and return ticket, they asked me to go to a room (most probably same as wher you're brought to). there, they inspected my bag up to my undies. when i told them that they can call my office in Bali, they just said that there was no need and it was just a random check. random check!!!??? then i was asked to go to the back of the room for a body check. so much for random chaeck, huh! it was a humiliating hour of my life.

I just don't understatnd though why they did not call my office when i was giving them the number. they even asked if i have credit card!!! i don't get the connection to this as well.

Anyways, i would like to THANK YOU for bringing this up for the high and mighty airport guards to know that they shouldn't and wouldn't do this just because they can.

Regards,
Dee

Embassy located but he said na nasa Jakarta nga rw yung embassy naten...haayy...i opened up to you kc i wanted those bastards to be punished and gave my traumatic experience justice...thank you so much na may mga taong katulad mo...

please: i am willing to share my story to strengthen the case against those cruel officers, i dont want to be in any of the news or videos...thanks...God bless us...

Can I share this sa Facebook I have two friends who are planning to go to Bali to attend a friend's wedding this year same route nila with you guys... via SG.

I feel you and I'm sorry I deliberately ignored your article just so because I don't want to be paranoid when I travel to SG (which was yesterday.) Though it is not Indonesia, I think, it can happen anywhere, so it may scare the hell out of me.

But now it's over and I am advocating justice for you and your friend. You can do this. And I believe God is with you.

hindi lang yan sa bali nangyayri chyng kahit saan merong ganyan...minsan ako ang naging bikima...i went out of the country where i am working para magbakasyon...i am holding an employment pass and reentry visa...on our way back after vacation...walang clear instruction sa kung saan ang exit and entrance sa immigration center...ang makikita mo lang people come and go in every direction...since wala namang mapapagtanungan...i follow the crowd kung saan sila papunta...in short it ended me up sa holding room ng immigration dept...although nakakatrauma ang experience...pasalamat na lang ako mabait ang officer...yun nga lang di maalis sa kanila ang bad notion sa ginawa ko...kasi naman ang daming Pinoy na illegal immigrants or overstaying or illegal ang pagpasok...:(

Hi Chyng,

I am so shocked at what they did to you. As a traveler myself, I can imagine the horror you were put through.

I was in Yogyakarta, Indonesia last month, but thankfully I didnt experience what you did.

I was thinking of going to Bali as well but reading from your post, I wont any more. Looks like I am not missing anything either- http://www.news.com.au/travel/news/bali-slammed-in-time-magazine/story-e6frfq80-1226035959320

Sana both of you will be able to get over your traumas over that harrowing experience. I'm never visiting Bali or Indonesia...may Palawan, Bohol, abd boracay naman taya. Sana maranasan ng mga immigration officers na yun ang humiliation and praning na naranasan nyo. karma is a bitch!

Oh Lord! after reading this, am now having second thought kung itutuloy namin ang vacation namin sa Bintan Indonesia this July. Katakot! And I know, hindi ako kasing tapang nyo, baka kinukwestyon palang ako maiyak na ko sa sobrang kaba. Ive been to Indonesia once, last May 2009, they just asked me habang tinatatakan un passport namin kun ano gagawin namin dun. They were nice, they were smiling etc. Nako, baka this time masaktuhan din kame ng officer na umepal sa inyo.
Well, if u guys decide to go out of the country again, try Malaysia.
Thanks, hope u'll enjoy ur bday/vacation next time :)

I got this link from FB and yes I saw this from the news too and I can't help myself na magalit sa naging treatment sa inyo. I travel frequently too and at times alone pa so I can't just imagine kung sa kin din mangyari to. Indonesia is a shit hole and most of them are uneducated barbaric people.

This is too inhumane.I hope there would be ways that Filipinos traveling abroad be accorded dignity and respect like any other traveler. I'd sign up for any advocacy regarding these rights and issues. To our DFA and officials, please act on our behalf. To the all Filipino travelers, let's keep our vigilance and be articulate with our basic rights... To other Filipinos who intend to misbehave when traveling...please think with the highest sense social responsibility.

I feel sad for what you guys have been through. After reading this story, it really freaked me out since I am scheduled to go to Bali alone this month! Like you, it has been my long time dream. I am glad that the Philippine Embassy has action regarding this issue, and I will equip myself with the needed contacts in case harangin din ako sa airport, scary lang kasi mag0isa ako. I am so bothered with this kind of racial discrimintation/ stereotyping, it is so unjust! Bali is a nice place and they should be thankful that we are appreciating the beauty of their country by wanting to go there!

if its any consolation, di lang Pinay ang nasisingle out sa airport ng Bali. it happened also sa mga white women. in fact, it got in the news na here in Phuket dahil sa maraming incidents na ganito since the Phuket-Bali direct flight opened. I think they just have a tougher anti-drug campaign na di maayos ang implementation ng procedure.

After a few months or so, balik na naman yun trafficker na yun. hmmph!

I sympathize with you and Dyanie. I could just imagine how terrrified you were during and after your ordeal with the Indonesian immigration.
I also commend the DFA for bringing this up with the Indonesian government.
However, I think our government authorities should not only file a protest with the Indonesian government but they must also look into how drug mules are able to leave our airports.
Unless we convince other governments, that drug mules are apprehended before they leave our airports, we will be receiving the same treatment not only from Indonesian immigration but from other countries as well.

Wow, Chyng and Dyan. You ladies are truly brave. I would have an anxiety attack if I had to undergo something like that anywhere. And you guys saved up for that vacation only to be ruined like that too. I am glad to see that the DFA has taken action. Hopefully nothing like that will ever happen again, not only in Indonesia but whatever country we Filipinos may go. Unfair naman ng ganun kasi. Chaka the way they answered to you guys pa! Like wala kayong right to ask questions! Grabe kumulo dugo ko. I'll share your post so more people will learn about it.

hi Chyng,

I am currently far from our home country and I can just imagine how traumatic your experience was. I have travelled to Bali a few times and the recent (4th) was not a good experience. I am an interior designer who used to work in SG. At the last week of February 2011, I had to go to Bali for a business trip. I would say, I was a little fortunate for my body was not searched when I arrived in Bali. The 2 officers started to search my lugggage thoroughly. I was really surprized how they singled me out among the other tourists...as in only me. So I can imagine the humiliation you´ve experienced. They searched my luggage right in front of the many tourists passing by. I couldn´t contain my anger and was trembling as I raised my voice at them, asking why they´re searching my luggage --- ONLY MY LUGGAGE. One of the officers snapped back at me "IT´S BECAUSE YOUR PEOPLE BRING GRASS HERE!!!" At the back of my head, I was thinking I shouldn´t talk much or they could hold me in the immigration and punish me. The other officer handed my passport to a 3rd officer who seemed to be of higher rank. He asked me why I´m in Bali and why I´m angry. He said, "we are only doing our job."
Afterwards, they let me go. The driver next day explained to me that drug traffickers were caught 2 months ago and they were all women, 2 Canadians and 1 Malaysian. They were sentenced to death. I don´t remember exactly his words but I have no idea if these details from him were accurate. He added that any woman who travels alone to Bali would even look more suspicious to the immigration officers.

I am proud of you for bringing this to the public´s attention. I hope that the government will do something about it. What happened to you could have happened to me. God bless the other victims.

This should be spread, can i share it...coz this is really terrifying and unfair for us pinoys...we hope to hear good result from our DFA about this matter...

welcome to the world of discrimination. it's everywhere. i bet in the philippines madami din same stories as yours or other discrimination complains. the thing is...if u complain, u dont have any evidence of it. they will just deny it. walang habol kumbaga. d ako nang-aasar pero this is the truth. very sorry about ur status there pero wala talagang magagawa maski pwesidente pa nila ang kausapin mo. im just thankful na u ladies came out alive and not raped. discrimination like this is everywhere. watch "locked-up" in discovery channel......there are same stories as urs....mas mabigat pa. i hope u recover in ur trauma. gosh! i just read this. i lived in Bali for two months last year where I traveled and lived alone. when i arrived at the airport, an immigration/customs officer also asked me to open my luggage before allowing me to exit but he did not have any reason or chance to bring me to a room. friendly naman pero napansin ko nga na ako lang yng pinagbukas ng bag out of all na kasabay ko. he just kept commenting that look indonesian but "more fair (maputi)". maybe i was lucky to hold a visa sponsored by an indonesian at that time.

i feel terrible about your experience at the same time i did not have to experience that when i was alone.

i'm not sure if you ever got to the place in Bali (back streets of Kuta) where there are stalls/tattoo shops selling "shrooms". i find it ironic that they treat people like they did to you when they sell somewhat a form of hallucinogen explicitly inside.

but i was a witness as to how corrupt that country is, that i think it is even worse than ours.

glad that someone was able to bring your experience to their attention!

there are stories like that here in Dubai, buto lng ng ubas napagbintangan na may drugs or kung anong substance daw sa bag ng guy ayun kulong without further investigation, kulong na di pa nag-uumpisa ang investigation ha. grabe kung ganyan ang ginagawa ng ibang lahi sa ating mga Pinoy then our government must be strict about our policies too, gawin din sa kanila ang thorough checking at pag nahulihan black list agad para di na makaulit at makabalik ng Pinas. I'm so glad you stood for your right by being brave enough to post your experience at Bali. We, Filipinos, should not take "crap" from other nation simply because we are a third world country. Keep the fighting spirit burning! Ganyan nga Pinay!

Thanks for posting this. Nakakaloka naman to. This just made me scrap Indonesia from our list. As if naman Pinoy lang ang pwede maging drug mule. I mean, I would feel it would have been fine kung may ibang nationality akong kasama (since you mentioned that their "hall of fame" were of diff nationalities), that would've been fair. Pero to isolate you just because they saw in your passport na Pinoy kayo, I dont think so. That's is simply discrimination - nakakagigil...

Just a thought, the govt should consider the same thing when people from countries with not so good reputation come to the Philippines. Minsan kasi, the Filipino hospitality is too good, that it makes us look weak.

Shared through twitter and fb. On the lighter side of it - sikat kayo ha :p

“You’re at the right place at the wrong time...ika nga.

Mabuhay kayo!

Chyng ang Dyan, i am at loss of words when i read your blog. However, i ADMIRE both of you for your bravery/ courage to come out in public to share this traumatic experience you both had in the hope of saving and letting the other filipino who wish to have a vacation on a land where we thought people welcome us with warmth and respect to be aware that this kind of thing could happen. I am pretty much sure that this happen all over the country. Unfortunately, we got the worst treatment for the label that other filipinos has created for us - the recent is, us being a drug trafficker. But as a general rule, to the rest of us filipino who still has our dignity intact and are also prone to this kind of incident caused by other filipinos -- WE NEED TO LOOK OUT ON EACH OTHER'S BACK. I believe we are still known to have that thing called PAGKAKAISA.

Chyng and Dyan you have my support. I will spread the word.

No whitesand...puro gray sand

Well, ako rin pala pa-Bali-bali pa and was dis-appointed.Why? para ka lang nasa Mindanao. Mas maganda pa Zamboanga. And ang mga beaches nila? Wala sa kalingkingan ng Boracay & Puerto. How about the atmosphere? The atmosphere is not wholesome!

Walang malls.
