mga BINTANG-ero kayo!My friend Dyanie and I planned an SG-Bali trip for our birthdays. We took Airphil's Manila-SG flight last May 26, 2011.
Dyanie was held in the Immigration simply because she cant present her company ID. She was suspected na mag-paiwan sa SG to work, and never return to Pinas. This experience alone was heart pounding- though it's only a matter of being approved and being declined to fly to SG. So what more if it's a matter of life and death...
Last May 28, we flew from SG to Bali via Airasia.
Airasia's airbus was full of different nationalities. But Dyanie and I were the only Filipinos on board. We landed in Denpasar airport at almost 11:40pm. We lined up in the Xray machines for our luggage to be scanned.
The moment the officer saw my Philippine passport - he carried my luggage. He asked me "is this yours?" I said yes. I started thinking what could be wrong with my luggage..
Then the officer scanned our hands too. We don't have any idea what's that for so we asked him. He answered "secret".
After he scanned our hands with that stick, he looked at me and said "come and follow me." He looked at Dyan and said "you also."
omg. what's wrong?!
So in front of all passengers of Airasia that night, kami pa ni Dyan ang mukhang may drugs! We followed the officer because we dont have a choice. We obeyed him, as if we already did something wrong. All other passengers were staring at us..
syet.. anong meron sa bag ko. at anong marks ang nakita nya sa kamay namin? kinabahan ako. this inst just the usual immigration thing. i felt this is something serious!
We entered the holding room. There were 3 officers inside. 2 males and a lady officer.
"Meet my Filipina friend. She was caught hiding packs of heroins in her luggage" said the officer. Sabay turo sa picture frames sa wall nila. It seemed like a gallery of recently caught drug traffickers all over the world. He also reminded me that DEATH is the PENALTY of those drug traffickers.
Paksyet. It's a matter of life and death in the hands of these Indonesian Police Officers. Im 100% sure Dyan and I were clean!
They offered something to drink but we refused.
Yoko nga, baka dahil jan sa drinks na yan magkaron pa ng drugs substance sa katawan namin..
"Do you know her?" asked the officer as he was pointing to the girl in the picture frame. - I answered no.
"Did you take drugs?" - Of course not!
"Did you have drugs hidden in your body?" - What?! Never!
nagpanting yung tenga ko. galit na galit ako. at the same time nalungkot. bakit ganun, tagged na ang pinoys as drug traffickers dahil sa kasalanan ng iilan..
"Let's check your bag".
The officer searched my things thoroughly. I was just looking at him. He checked every compartment of my luggage too.
Ang lakas ng kaba ng dibdib ko. I knew he could frame me up. At wala na kong laban if that happens. Nasa teritoryo nila kami.
Ansama sama ng loob ko. Dahil lang Pinoy kami, instant suspect na agad kami.
After he messed with all my things and found nothing, I asked the officer what could be wrong and why was he checking us. He just answered "because the 2 of you are beautiful girls."
putangina mo, nakikipag-cooperate kami sa inyo. naabala at napahiya na kami kanina pa. kaya sana sumagot ka ng maayos kung may tinatanong kami.
For the 3rd time, we went outside the holding room to scan my luggage. I was really very nervous (and irritated). I could imagine him almost saying that he found something in my bag. Remember, he was holding my bag all the time. I never had the chance to touch it again..
you dont trust us. and we dont trust you either. ang advantage lang, nasa Indonesia tayo. at kayo ang may authority.
Now they looked at Dyan.
"Are you hiding drugs inside your body?" No!
"Why is your belly big?"
My friend was offended. But she answered politely. "Because I'm fat. And in case you don't see, my arms and legs are proportion to every part of my body."
The lady officer wasn't convinced, she ordered a body check on her.
as narrated by Dyan:
Gusto ko man magsabi ng ayoko ng body check, wala akong nagawa. Bansa nila yan. So sunod lang ako sa gusto nila. Pumasok kami sa Body Check Room. Inikot ko yung mata ko to check if there are surveillance cameras. Tapos ni-lock ko yung pinto. Tinanong ko si lady officer kung bakit namin to ginagawa. May 3 pinay daw na nahulihan ng drugs sa loob ng tyan nila. Sympre di ko alam kung totoo nga yun. Pinahubad nya ko ng damit. As in HUBAD lahat. Body search. Pero ang only body part na hinawakan nya ay ang tyan ko. Pero nakaka-harassed pa din. Wala naman siyang nakitang kakaiba sakin.
no offense pero meron ba silang extensive training na by just touching a body part malalaman na kung may drugs dun? ang hirap maniwala. they never had hightech machines to start with. and why cant they even afford a drug-sniffing dog?! mayabang lang sila. pero wala silang masyadong alam.
Now back in the holding room, I was with the other 2 male officers. They started bragging that they captured all the drug traffickers in the picture frames. Im still not sure what will happen next as they deprived us from telling anything.
What now!? gusto nyo lang may mapatunayan kayo at may madagdag kayong picture jan sa wall nyo?!
Im so proud of Dyan. She went back in the room and still didnt breakdown. I knew I will start crying too if I see her terrified.
pero sa totoong buhay daw, sobrang takot na nya na masesetup kami.
Dyan said I dont look scared at all too. I just look very irritated.
pero sa totoo lang, nafi-feel kong anytime sasabihin ng officers na may nakita sila sa bag namin at ibibintang nila na sa amin yun.. at di na kami makakauwi ng Pinas. =(

After 1.5 hours, they finally let us go. Wala silang nakita. They thanked us for being cooperative pero di ko pinansin yung hand shake offer nila. Galit na galit ako. Pero alam ko bawal ako magsalita. Hindi rin sila nagsorry sa abala na ginawa nila. Para san pa, wala na kaming gana na pumasok ng Bali. Sirang sira yung bakasyon namin dahil sa ganitong pagwelcome nila sa Pinoy.
Sabagay their sorry wont be enough. Kulang yan sa kahihiyan, sobrang takot, trauma, at paranoia na inabot namin dahil sa kanila. Ang sama sama ng loob ko. Putangina nyo!
We met the hotel driver who's been waiting for us since 11:40PM. We finally got out of the airport at 1:30AM. I thanked the driver for waiting for us. He wasn't surprised that we were the last to go out. Sabi nya, kapag Pinoy chinecheck daw muna.

We felt we were unwelcomed visitors.
Putangina nyo! Naging praning na kami everytime may police kaming makikita. Or everytime dadaan kaming xray, iba na ang kabog ng dibdib namin. Gabi gabi, paulit ulit na naming pinapagpag ang bawat damit namin - just to check na walang naisingit na drugs sa gamit namin. We're so traumatized that we wont be planning to go out of the country anytime soon.

All I wanted is to write my traumatic experience, and to warn my co-Pinoy travelers, specially those who travel solo, that they could be the next "random suspect".
It never crossed my mind that this incident would reach the media and the government.
Initially, I never wanted to file a case, be seen on TV, be heard on the radio programs, and be read on the newspapers. It's really beginning to be stressful now. But the messages Ive been receiving have challenged and pushed me to file my case. Thanks to Ms. Susan Ople, for filing the case on our behalf, and to DFA USEC Rafael Seguis for the support. Hearing the words directly from them gave me more courage to pursue this.
Dyanie and I would like to express our deepest gratitude to Ms. Susan Ople for filing the case on our behalf. We truly appreciate it. This help is what we truly needed. It's glad to know that someone who has the right knowledge about this matter has finally confirmed that this is a case of disrespect.
FYI (specially to those unidentified / anonymous commenters na nagmamarunong lang) do yourselves a favor and stop humiliating yourselves and showing off your ignorance by leaving nonsense comments. Those are being deleted anyway.

It was really terrifying.. yun nga lang na nasa ibang teritoryo ka at paghinalaan ka, what more sa ibang bansa?.. hmmmm.. I agree with you na mejo mag maangas naman ang Pinoy for the reason na inaagrabyado nila tayo eh.. Both of you deserve an apology Chyng or more. One pinay was mistakenly accused of carrying drugs in Aus before, but it was just a packet of ice tea and they weren't able to prove anything. So they sued the immigration officials for all the psychological trauma they caused her. In the end she won the case and got compensated thousand of dollars. They can't just do this to suspected Filipinos or any citizen for that matter. And if it's a routine check-up, they should at least be professional handling it. Wala pa lang kasi nagcocomplain, makakahanap din sila ng katapat nila.
That's totally unfair! I really felt bad when reading this entry because of their actions. I almost had a similar incident sa San Francisco airport when they inspected all my bags and even swipe my shoes for any bit or speck of prohibited drugs. They just told me that it is a random check but I could sense that it is not really random. Good thing they never detained me that long as I was even actually flying out so if ever I really carry one they should be happy that I'm leaving their country. I really hated that airport. I was on other airport in the US but they never treated me like that.
I could relate how afraid you are that they can just simply say that they found something in your things and you will be in jail. It is really traumatic and we are suffering this kind of discrimination because of the mistakes done by a few people.

That's really f*cked-up. A lot of people talaga (and sadly, officers) are prone to racial profiling. I'm glad you blogged about this. So sorry about what happened. That's unheard of, that kind of "inspection". Mag-invest kaya sila sa mga electronic detectors or whatevs.

I'm happy that both of you got home safe and thank you rin for sharing your story so that everyone will know that they should either avoid going to Indonesia or be extra careful every second. and that being cautious should also be applied when travelling to other countries too.

I hope na hindi na magspread yung reputation of Filipinos as drug traffickers. Sana the government would do something about employment para hindi na kapit patalim ang mga tao. At sana din huwag ng gawin ng iilan sa mga kababayan natin yan.

This is terrifying. I have a sole trip to BKK this August and sobrang natatakot na ako. Baka ganun din dun.
Report niyo kaya ito sa DFA? Or maybe dapat sa consulate/embassy? Hay. Dapat may gawin sila. Kung policy ng Indonesia to check on Filipinos,wala tayo magagawa dun. Pero baka pwede na meron presence ng isang Filipino consulate/ foreign officer/ DFA/embassy personnel habang ginagawa yun, para naman hinde sobrang wala kang kakampi yung feeling. hay.
You and your friend are really brave and strong to go through this ordeal..It really is such a shame...I visited bali in 2009...It was a wonderful experience...but after reading the Sh*t they put you through...they have tainted their own tourism....You are very right, who are they to wrongly accuse and judge? i hope your story reach the government and our government needs to act to see to it that justice be done to what you experienced, and also protect pinoys going to indonesia in the future. something must be done and should be done in cases like this. branding someone because of their nationality is definitely a no-no. and hopefully, we don't do the same branding to others. hope all is well with you and your friend. i will support you and future actions against the injustice that you received from those indon bastards.

I have some Indonesian friends and also Indonesian clients, at lahat naman sila mababait at maganda ang tratuhan namin sa isa't-isa. I actually enjoy talking to them kasi friendly sila. So hopefully huwag naman tayong mag-generalize. Not all of them are like those Indonesian police officers you and your friend encountered.

That is seriously the scariest thing that can ever happen when you're traveling. I don't know how you guys managed to not freak out, and to keep your cool. Nakakabagsak ng loob naman, nang dahil sa mga iilan na Pinoy. Tapos kasalanan niyo pa na dahil maganda at Filipino kayo, pinaghinilaan na? What kind of logic is that?
Still, it's the fault of several Filipinos who actually brought illegal substances into foreign territories why the innocent ones are suspected of doing the same thing. Because they're assholes, tayo tuloy naabala.

I just hope there is something we can do about it as Filipinas traveling to Bali. We've never had any problems with any other country we've visited before.

Hi Chyng, been following your blog for quite some time. So sad to hear what you and your friend went through in this supposedly beautiful place. This type of incident is not one to be shrugged off. This is a serious matter, you were so close to losing everything you've got going on here. But I do hope you don't lose your love for traveling. Good people will always outnumber the bad ones. And though it will take a while for you to get over what happened, I hope well-wishes from the people who care for you, including your readers, will be enough to hopefully move on. God will bless you more, and He'll take care of those people.

i feel for you and your friend. Yon ngang SOP sa other airports na i-swipe bags at i-run yong samples gc nakakatakot na kasi baka ma-frame-up. We experienced that in London and JFK.
Then at JFK, my hubby and I were "randomly selected" for thorough search. Yong carry-on ko, binulatlat lahat ng laman. Katakot kasi pinili lang kami among others, special lane daw then we were brought in a holding room then we realized what will happen. Though, hindi naman umabot sa point na pinahubad kami ng damit. But man, it was terrifying enough. Tapos wala din explanation na binigay pero napansin namin yong mga parang latino features ang pinipili at yong mga tipong gaya namin namin bound for middle east.
Then, nag-search ako sa net. Ganun pala yon, Kahit sinasabing random search, parang may profiling pa rin. Kasi may traveler sa US na lagi siyang naseselect for "random search." Galit na galit din sya kasi nga naman kung random bakit lagi siya naseselect...
I think, kailangan ito ma-icomplain sa DFA or sa Philippine embassy sa Indonesia.
I will never go to Indonesia, taga nyo sa bato yan! Sa kanila na lang yun! (at wala akong pakelam sa mga ibang opinyon kasi hindi naman kayo nagbabayad ng ticket ko no!) Walang kwentang immigration authorities! Hope people like them (the ones that did this to you) BURN and ROT in hell!

Naku my sister experienced something similar in HongKong. She heard the xray inspector say "Filipina... better check" and they exhaustively checked her luggage and questioned her a lot. All that hassle because she was a Filipina. They thought mag TNT sa HK.
Nakakainis. The discrimination we all go through because of a few incidents from our fellow pinoys. Na ge-generalize na tayo agad.

hi gurls..i have the same experienced with u..although not as a drug tafficker. But the way they treated me as a Filipino, it's a big hayyyyy... I was in Germany last week,by the time I arrived in Frankfort airport in Munich then I gave my passport to the officer and then the officer ask me what is my purpose of visiting their country and I said for business. And then the officer asked me if I can understand english or should I need a translator???? waaahh nkakapraning xa...nag-uusap na kmi in english saka pa xa magtatanong ng gnun?? ano un??? and then he asked me how much money do i have?? and so on... gosh... as in grabe ung discrimination tlga nila sa pinoy :( sana our govt will do something about this...

OMG. I was terrified. As in I read everything through this post at napapaput*ng ina rin ako!Sa Malaysia at Singapore pa lang ako nakarating. Nung sa SG,nahold ako dahil sa keychain at kinuha nila iyon.. :( Gift pa naman. Dapat this June 1 punta akong singapore. I have tickets nga eh. Something came up lang kaya di ko natuloy. Pero after reading this, parang nakakatakot magvisit sa ibang bansa. Well, Singapore is different. Pero Bali, Indonesia... may balak kaming pumunta dun!
I would be one of the people who would support and encourage you to seek legal advice regarding this. To fight for this and make it one of your life's advocacies. Show them they picked the wrong girls to pick on.

There's bias everywhere and because there are people who really screw up...Twisted! I feel you even a bit...we were once in Qatar because snow delayed us that our connecting flight left without us...we have to stay in Doha for 13 hours...among the passengers ako lang ang may inspection sa separate room, sobrang kainis yun feeling...mas lalo yan sa inyo na you accused na agad ang tingin.

I have friends na naka experience ng rude officers sa Indonesia. Girl din sila,na hold sila for 24 hours at ang babastos ng mga officers na nag interrogate sa kanila.
Indonesia is known to have a very rude immig officers, nakakasad lang kasi hindi nyo masyado na ejoy yung Bali trip nyo. I heard maganda daw sa Bali.
Uhmm, sana lang mabasa ito ng embassy natin sa indonesia so atleast they can do something about it, maraming mga Pinay ang nabibiktima nila. Sobrang traumatic talaga.

I feel bad for your friend. I think regardless of how long has been this thing happened, you guys need to go to go to some kind of counselling. Being naked in front of someone,let alone a total stranger, is already traumatic, how much more the reason that goes with it.

I'm just glad that you and your friend Dyan are both OK, and they didn't set you up. I just hope we Filipinos don't have to go through hell in other countries because of the few who were caught doing illegal stuff. I don't think I'll be going to Indonesia anytime soon. It's a huge turn off how they could treat tourists like that. So sick!

I totally felt bad for you and your friend. If I were in your place, I think I would've felt and done the same. IMO, the behavior of those officers was unacceptable. I mean, telling you that you are beautiful that's why they have to search and investigate on you? They could've said a better explanation. Also stereotyping huh?! Not all Filipinos are drug pushers!! Oh, the only odd thing that I experienced was being held by some HK police for a search and interview cos they mistaken me as an illegal alien from Nepal. Booo!!!! But, they were being friendly tho.

Actually during my Solo trip last January coming from Malaysia to Singapore mahigpit narin sila eh I also went to their holding room but I'm glad that I wasn't alone because there were caucasians with me in three who were on hold for bringing smokes. I was going to SG for a quick day trip. Natakot din ako nung nahold ako eh buti nalang may isang white guy American soldier na naghihintay sa akin sa bus namin :( Gosh. And I was traveling alone pa ha.
This is really a form of harassment maybe we can file something to the UN ? maybe? I dunno this is really harassment and very much racist. Hay kasi naman kasalanan ng isa kasalanan ng lahat.

Nabasa ko sa mag ni sharon na never rin siya bumalik sa Indonesia kasi nawalan siya ng mga bags na nabili niya sa SG. Kahit nasa room hotel nanakaw pa.

Thank God both of you came out unharmed out of that ordeal. I'm not surprised. Me and a friend experienced the same discrimination in Malaysia, and to think stopover lang namin yun to go to England! Feeling talaga nila basta Filipino, kriminal. No exception. Filipinos should be warned if they plan to travel to these prejudiced, pseudo-developed and illiterate infested countries. Spread the word, brave Chyng, and we will do the same...

Seriously, I think they have every right to uphold their laws and protect their national security. However, it must be carried out in a professional and dignified manner. If you were indeed drug traffickers, you still merit a humane treatment and must be accorded due process --- no harassment kahit verbal man lang.
I applaud both of your composure because I was totally appalled of what I've just read. Na-imagine ko sarili ko and malamang sa nag-wala na'ko pero alam kong mas delikado 'yun kase baka mang-frame up sila. Kaya super *clap clap* para sa inyong dalawa.
I know this experience might have squashed the travel bug in you for quite some time pero go lang ng go. I hope may mangyaring maganda (na outcome) pero good thing na nabasa 'to ng mga tao. i think he judged us by the color of our skin eh brown din naman sha.
tapos nung i present namnin passports namin (US) nagulat sha at naging very courteous sa pag istima sa amin. i think it's really unfair.
btw, wala bang travel advisories in pi about this? kung wala dapat mag lagay na para di ganyang na tro traumatize legal visitors.
i agree with one of the comments here. don't generalize that all indonesians are like that. i have indonesian friends and they all are nice. the experience is frightening indeed. maybe you should contact the philippine embassy in indonesia so they will know that this is happening and that it should be stopped.

Chyng, thank you so much for sharing your experience. Gusto ko pa naman pumunta ng Bali, pero dahil dito nagdadalawang isip na ako. While I understand and respect authorities for doing their jobs, there is something about your experience that's just wrong. I'm no human rights expert, but I'm sure there has to be a violation there somewhere. Perhaps you could consider approaching certain groups, but I'm not sure if that would do much. At the very least, you shared your story which leads to awareness. Thank you.

While I am all for performing a full body cavity search on all Indonesians entering or residing in the Philippines, I believe your best course of action is to lodge a formal complaint with the appropriate gov't agency in Indonesia via our Department of Foreign Affairs.
Granted, DFA's track record has been absolutely pathetic. Still, it would be best to have a formal complaint filed while we do a massive & worldwide smear campaign on Indonesia.

This is sad... i had the chance to visit Bali last year, but thank God hindi naman nangyari sa amin ito.
I know how you feel, i've had the same experience when i entered mainland china. Good thing you stayed calm, kasi as long as you know na wala ka kasalanan hindi naman talaga kaylangan mag freak out. Mas napapag-initan kasi usually yung mga lumalaban pa.
As for my Bali's experience, yep i can attest that their officers were mukhang maniac. But all in all, Bali is still a great place to visit and visitors before hand should know that Bali is considered as one of the sinful countries and necessary precautions should be taken seriously.
This is an isolated case, like what happened to Manila Bloodbath last August. It could happen to anybody and any countries, but bear in mind that as a traveller, as soon as you step out of your comfort zone, kakambal na agad ang risk o panganib sa bawat kilos na gagawin and be ready to face and embrace everything.
If you can only hear stories of other people's experience here, i could say na maswerte pa rin kayo.
Be thankful for the experience and learn from it. On a positive note, things like this can be part of you growing as a traveller and adventurer, you'll soon realize that without the hassle, a trip can sometimes be a boring one.

I could not keep myself silent on this. Ito na ang resulta ng kapabayaan ng ating gobyerno sa ating mga kababayan. Hindi tayo kayang ipagtanggol ng ating mga opisyales laban sa mga banyagang ito. I am a teacher in an international school here in jakarta and I couldn't believe that a fellow filipino would be treated unjustly and maliciously in Bali. This is so saddening to know. OMG.. Sounds terrifying.. Actually we're having a trip to Indonesia (Jakarta) on July.. I hope this will not happen to us.. anyway it's Cebu Pac and I think there will be lots of Filipinos with us in that flight. I doubt if they can all hold us and do what they did to you. If ever that will happen to us, I dont think kaya ko ung gnawa nyo.. Baka magpanic ako ng sobra at mgbreakdown. Let's all hope Indonesian will stop treating Filipinos like Drug Traffickers...

i do not wish for them indonesians (or any other nationality) to end up with the same plight here in our country (to get even?), instead, i wish that abuses like these would stop.
funny, too, that our society puts an emphasis on "don't get harassed" as opposed to "don't harass."
after this debacle, i suggest you plan another grand trip so all the negative vibes you got from your bali trip would be washed away.
i hope that both of you are ok. i can't imagine the feelings/emotions that you two felt during the interrogation. but don't let this stop you from your travel adventures.
Also, Bali is overrated.
i hate to say this, but i think that many (not all) security personnel have low IQs and undesirable attitudes such as prejudice. when i was a kid, i was stopped by a security guard on my way out of uniwide simply because i was a kid that didn't dress well and was stereotyped as shop lifter. i mean "wtf?" i am not that stupid and he had no evidence in the first place. what embarrassment, fear, annoyance, anger... and you can't fight back to the man with a gun. if he's stupid enough to interrogate me without evidence, who knows what more stupid things he can do. it's always a losing battle with stupid people, they'll drag you down to their level where they are best (quoting from my friend). of course it is much much worst in your case where no one would help you. i just like to emphasize another angle which applies to any security personnel in any country. i can't avoid being "jobbist" (in analogy to racist). certain types of people will go to certain types of jobs. i hate it that so much power can be given to people in jobs that don't require a high educational background. the same also applies to abusive CAT/ROTC officers. these are usually those who are not so bright in academics, the jocks so to speak. i'm thankful you guys are safe now. to everyone, be careful around people with such jobs, where ever you are. and of course, these type of people shouldn't be the ones showcased to foreigners by making them airport personnel.
OMG, grabe naman ang Indonesians na yun...Di hamak na mas mabait pa pala ang immigration sa South Korea..I was there last April, and solo lang ako nagtravel pero walang masyadong tanong sakin. Di rin nghanap ng hotel accommodation voucher, etc...And walang katulad ng naexperience niyo..Actually, yun ang isa sa mga worries ko nung pagtravel ko. Pero buti na lang at di kagaya ng mga Koreans ang mga Indonesians na yun.

This is a horrible horrible experience and I feel so bad this is how Indonesian immigration officers look upon Filipino travelers. You have every right to feel angry about this experience and I do hope this does not happen to anyone else again!
This is so scary! Glad that you girls are safe. I was solo traveling in Indonesia in 2009 and fortunately didn't encounter such when I arrived Bali midnight.

I've always wanted to go to Bali and explore the place... but after reading your story, I realized that it just ain't worth it. I feel for the terror you must've felt during those hours, but I also admire the courage you showed whn faced with such a situation. I only pray that I can be a s strong as the two of you if ever ako naman ang nalagay sa situation na iyon, God forbid.
Im canceling my trip to Bali this November. It's supposed to be my bday gift as well, but I dont want to take the risk. Bali is a lovely place, no doubt, but i dont wanna gamble.

Nakakatakot ang experience nyo, I'm glad you're okay though. Sana lang we can do something to correct what the world think about us Pinoys. It's sad that they generalize us, it's sad din na dahil sa kalokohan ng ibang tao affected na ang reputation nating lahat.
I'll share this sis so my friends would be warned too.
Part of that interrogation was to break down the individuals, since you two were innocent after all you both confronted it with courage and this gives us travelers also the hope that whatever happens, we'll just think of what the two of you went through and just act in calm manner though frightening coz its a freaking death sentence staring at you and the chances of planted evidence are always present.
Thank God, you two got out of it and blogged about it to spread this power tripping and uncalled for stereotyping of Filipinos as 'drug mules'

We went to Bali last october 2010 with a group of friends and we have not experienced that kind of things. Its just sad that bad things happen. Nilalahat na nila kasi pag pilipino ka ngdadala ka na ng drugs. Blame it sa mga taong gumagawa ng masama at iniisip lang nila sarilu nila. I hope our government do something about this! Bali is actually one of my most favorite travel destinations here in Asia...I have been there at least three times. My last was in 2008 though.
After reading your blog (and putting myself in your shoes) I just couldn't help but get so bothered...

OMG this is truly a horrible experience. I can imagine how terrified you were especially pareho kayo babae. Ako nga lagi ko kasama mag travel hubby ko pero ingat pa rin kami sa mga ibang lahi na customs officer...you never know what they can frame you for talaga.

Now I am worried about our trip next week. It won't be in Indonesia, but I am praying we don't get treated the same way. We will be facing immigration officers 5 times as we will be hopping from one country to another; I hope we don't come across such discrimination. :(

That should be a lesson for you, there are so few places in the world that are not aware of what filipinos do and act like. Better just stay home or go to enchanted kingdom, otherwise if you can afford business class and dress well you will not mistaken for drug smugglers. Hindi lang naman kayo, europeans, aussies and others are also treated like that. Those kasi who go to far off places and those off the beaten track in pursuit of adventure usually find the wrong kind of adventure waiting. Curb your wanderlust or face the consequences. You young people are bored with your lives.
I can feel the anger and the humiliation that you had with the Indonesian "authority". Maga walanghiya talaga... It makes me so mad of this stereotyping that they imposed on our kababayans.
Let's boycott their country, discouraged our kababayans not to visit this wayward country. I hope our government should do something to eliminate things like these, who knows we might have our kababayans na na framed up na in the past.

i know how you guys feel. nastuck din kami sa immigration sa singapore naman. as in ang tagal tagal kaming ni-hold dun. its because the filipino before us faked his ticket going back to the philippines. so since pilipino kami ayun nihold din kami at nicheck ng bonngga ang passport at tickets namin. buti na lang hindi as traumatizing as you guys have experienced pero nakakatakot pa din kasi puwede kaming makulong for something na wala namn kami kasalanan and all because of a kapalpakan ng isa pang filipino.. :(

I've heard so many traumatizing experience of our fellowmen sa immigration ng Indonesia. Mas malala pa ata kasi sakanila ang mga drugs and human trafficking at money laundering.
Magandang maghigpit ng security but they should be sure kasi mashadong demoralizing kapag napagbintangan ka lang. magpasalamat na lang tayo at ok kau ng friend mo and I hope nag-enjoy kayo sa Bali trip niyo. Ipagdasal na lang natin yang mga officers na yan.
As for the Philippine immigration na sobra kung maka interrogate, wla silang karapatang hindi ka paalisin at puro suspetsa lang pinapa-iral. Dpat wag ka ng kabahan next time at tarayan mo yang mga officers na yan.
Bottomline is mg buwaya silang lahat!!!!

It was really terrifying and so unfair what they did to you and your friend. Di porke Pinoy ka e drug mule ka na. And you should complain about it in the embassy/dfa para they can take some action regarding this. Grabeng harassment na to sa inyo ng friend mo.

Thank you so much for your courage. In going through all that with incredible dignity and in sharing your story and even allowing strangers to pass it forward. Your strength is inspiring and we Filipinos, who are so used to cowering before foreigners and hiding away our "embarrassing" stories of victimization, need more of it.
I'm no expert on international law, but this could well be the basis of official government action toward Indonesia. I'm linking to your story on FB in hopes it will get the (let's hope, official) attention it deserves.
Thank you again for your shining example of grace under fire. I'm so sorry it happened to you. I hope you do believe that you lost nothing because of the shit they pulled. They're the ones who showed just how pathetic and depraved they are. I am furious on your behalf, for whatever that's worth.

This is really scary. :( I am scheduled to go to Jakarta soon to teach. And I think I should inform my employer about this incident para lang maiwasan yung ganung pangyayari. Puro babae rin makakasama ko papunta sa Indonesia. Baka pag-trip-an din kami. Hay...I guess, powertrip yung ginawa nung mga Police officers sa inyo. Ang sama lang talaga kasi naging judgmental sila agad porket mga Pinoy. E sa kanila nga nanggaling yung mga motorcycle riders na nangha-hablot ng bags eh. Argh!

OMGosh! I cannot believe the terrible ordeal you and Dyan went through.
And I seriously loved Bali when I went there last year... and promote it to friends who are meaning to do Asian travel. Now I'm thinking twice about going back. Twice, thrice, shoot............ I'm so stunned. I'm so sorry to hear that this was such a traumatic experience. And I commend you for being strong girls while in there.
It's so sad how the Balinese/Indonesians treated you. They should be more diligent in checking background before casting suspicion.

I feel so sorry for what happened to both of you. It's a shame that the mistake of other filipino,,lahat tayo is branded that way by the Indonesian authority. Mga racist sila kung ganyan ang trato nila sa mga filipino na tourist. I admire your courage for sharing your story, this give us all the idea not to visit their country and be more cautious when we travel.
